St James’s Market Pavilion, Mayfair
Summary
- A tiny pavilion or folly allowing for architectural playfulness and a space capable of hosting a range of activities
- Concept of storing and displaying items of value underpins the design, reflecting the mercantile history of the area
- Re-interpreting the concept of the safety deposit box, exhibits are displayed in timber-veneered glass vitrine
- An audio system is set behind a filigree timber scheme to provide a soundtrack to compliment the visual display
Challenges overcome:
As the unit opens fully on two sides:
- a heavy golden shutter hidden in the bulkhead draws down at night, leaving the contents of the pavilion visible round the clock
- heaters hidden behind the boxes ensure a minimum temp is maintained and condensation does not form on the glass
